Okay, so today was THE BIG DAY. My Mom and I went to The Big Island to see Kilauea (the volcano). This is the part of the trip that I have been most excited about. Seeing and experiencing a live volcano. Something I've only ever dreamed of being able to do. As we go to board the plane for the inter-island hop; I pull out the camera to take a picture and this is when I remember that I plugged the battery in to charge last night. I forgot to put the battery back in my camera. I'm so mad at myself.

Oh well, it doesn't do to stay mad at something you can't fix.
We had a great time! We got to see a crater that the volcano left behind many years ago. We walked a lava tube and walked through hot sulphuric steam. But, the best part was walking the lava field and going out to see the steam rising as the fresh lava hit the ocean---new land in the making. When we walked out it was day light and as the sun was setting the steam clouds went from white to red. It was awesome!! Part of me is glad that I didn't have my camera...I would have been so caught up trying to get THE perfect shot that I wouldn't have been able to just soak it in and savor the moment. kwim? On our way back to the tour bus it was getting darker and darker, it was so difficult to see where we were putting our feet. My Mom would have stumbled and fallen if the sure footed tour guide hadn't been there to lend her his arm. (everyone say 'Thanks Bobby.') Shoot, there was one time that Mom and I were leaning on each other and we both went off balance and almost fell together. Definately rough terrain---I feel for the two cane using ladies I saw headed out as they were going to be coming back at dark-thirty. I hope they had flashlights to help them out.
I'm going to try to convince Chris that we need to come back. I want to do the volcano experience again---this time on my own time-line and not a tour guides. We didn't get to spend enough time at all the different spots.
My battery is now in my camera. Tomorrow is the Polynesian Culture Center which includes a luau. We'll be eating good tomorrow!
